If you are running standard size and want to match the original speed rating, ie ZR, that narrows your choice down to about four. I use Continental Premium Contact 2, W rated, which I like, and they have a good wet rating. They will cost you around £100 per corner fitted. If you (and your insurer) are happy to go down to V rating, then Dunlop Blu-response look like they take a lot of beating.

Blue response for me
From BMTR at Perry Barr, Road Force wheel balance (google it), competitive price, polite and courteous service oh and they sell/fit racing tyres so hopefully they know what they're doing!
Only "issue" was one of the younger fitters asking "what is it, a kit car?"
I replaced my tyres last summer and spent a while looking at the (rather limited) options.
Unfortunately the size tyre worn by the S Series is pretty much the same as a modern day basic hatchback - limiting the choices of a performance tyre.
In the end I went for Vredestein Sportrac 5's which seemed about the sportiest all weather choice. Price was also really reasonable, at about £75 a corner.
I've been very pleased with them so far.

I thought the highest rating for 205 x 60 x 15 was V, not seen any W rated anywhere.Have fun,

A quick look on Black Circles brings up just two, a Goodyear and a Yokahama but both are Winter tyres.

And neither are W rated.Rob.
Put Goodyears on early in the year (I think they are Efficientgrip) as they had a higher wet driving rating. Can't say I notice a difference compared with previous Pirelli P something or other. Can't also say that they are any better in the wet either mind. Re the Contis- IMHO they are absolute Ste in cold/icy conditions so if you take yours out in these conditions you may want to take bear this in mind?
Thanks Mike,
They were grouped in with Bridgestone as a Quality tyre, but I have never used them, so will steer clear then ( did you see what I did there ? )
Bridgestones, which I generally use, on all my cars, except some rather excellent Yokohamas I had on my MGB, which come up on offer occasionally , were only a little more, delivered only, but I have a Tame Tyre fitter I trust.
If you can get a deal fitting tyres a good place to buy from on-line

I've had Contis on most of my cars all year round for the past 15 years or so, and always been happy with them. This is borne out by tyre tests where Contis usually score well on wet grip and wet braking, which is why I moved to them in the first place.Mind you, most summer tyres are next to useless on ice.
I don't think there's any legal requirement to have a minimum speed rating on any car, but I have heard that insurers can be a bit sniffy in the event of a claim if (i) your tyres don't match the theoretical top speed of the car, or (ii) your tyres don't match the speed rating of the original fitment.
According to a contemporary factory brochure, both the S3 and V8S were fitted with ZR tyres. But at 140 and 148mph top speed respectively, neither actually needed them.
Personally I would be comfortable with V rated tyres. I got W rated because they were available in the tyres I wanted, not the other way round.
The observant amongst you will notice that the V8S was specced with 10.6" (270mm)front discs!
